Band Score Scale
Chapter focus: Understand scores before setting a target.
Start here
IELTS reports a band from 0 to 9. Listening and Reading scores are based on correct answers, while Writing and Speaking are judged with public criteria. A target is useful only when you know which skill needs improvement.
What you need to know
Use official descriptors as a learning map, not as a promise. Band 6 usually means the learner can communicate adequately but still has noticeable errors. Band 7 requires more flexible language and better control. The exact conversion from raw answers can vary by test version, so use official practice materials.
Step-by-step plan
- Confirm your test purpose, version, and date.
- Take a realistic baseline task.
- Record evidence instead of guessing your level.
- Practise one skill with a clear time limit.
- Review errors and repeat the same skill later.
Practical method
Make a baseline test, record each skill, identify the weakest criterion, and repeat after two weeks. Never compare one raw score from Listening with a Writing band as if they were the same measurement.
Guided practice
Write your target band, current evidence, weakest skill, weekly practice hours, and review date.
Self-check
- Can I explain the main idea of this page to another learner?
- What evidence shows my current strength?
- What single action will I complete this week?
- What mistake will I check before my next test?
