Reading Tips and Samples
Chapter focus: A complete reading routine. This lesson explains timing, passage preview, question order, guessing, vocabulary review, and evidence logs.
Start here
This lesson is written for a beginner. Read the explanation slowly, study the examples, complete the practice, and then produce one answer of your own. IELTS does not reward difficult words by themselves. It rewards clear communication, relevant ideas, and controlled English.
বাংলা সহায়তা: আগে প্রশ্নের কাজ বুঝুন, পরে নিয়মটি প্রয়োগ করুন। প্রতিটি নতুন নিয়মের জন্য নিজের জীবনের একটি সহজ উদাহরণ লিখুন। বাংলা থেকে শব্দে-শব্দে অনুবাদ না করে ইংরেজি বাক্যের স্বাভাবিক গঠন অনুশীলন করুন।
What this skill means
In IELTS, this skill is connected to meaning and accuracy. You must first understand what the question or task requires. Next, locate the important information. Finally, give an answer that fits the grammar, word limit, audience, and purpose. A learner who follows these three stages usually improves faster than a learner who only memorises lists.
Step-by-step method
- Understand the task. Circle the instruction, topic, time reference, and word limit.
- Predict the language. Decide whether you need a name, number, noun, verb, opinion, reason, comparison, or example.
- Find or create the evidence. In Listening and Reading, locate the exact evidence. In Speaking and Writing, create a relevant idea and support it.
- Check the form. Review spelling, singular or plural, verb tense, articles, punctuation, and register.
- Review the reason. Do not only mark right or wrong. Write why the answer works and why the distractor or error fails.
Core knowledge
The important words for this lesson are not isolated vocabulary items. They are patterns. Learn a pattern with its grammar and an example. For instance, learn as a result of + noun, because + clause, and this led to + noun together. In a speaking answer, use answer + reason + example. In a writing paragraph, use topic sentence + explanation + example + link. In a Listening or Reading gap, use prediction + location + exact answer + checking.
Examples with explanations
- Example 1: The question says, “The course begins on ___.” The recording says, “It starts on the 14th of September.” The answer is 14 September because the date is the requested information.
- Example 2: A passage says, “Some residents support the plan, although many remain uncertain.” The statement “All residents support the plan” is False because all changes the meaning.
- Example 3: A speaking answer can be short but developed: “Yes, I enjoy cooking, especially at weekends, because it helps me relax.” It gives an answer, a detail, and a reason.
- Example 4: A clear writing paragraph follows this logic: “Public transport reduces congestion. One bus can carry many passengers, so fewer private cars are needed. For example, a reliable bus route can reduce traffic during rush hour.”
Common mistakes
Beginners often choose a familiar word instead of the word supported by the text. They may write too much when a task has a word limit, ignore a plural ending, use a memorised sentence that does not answer the question, or connect two ideas with an incorrect linker. These are fixable problems. Keep an error log with four columns: original answer, corrected answer, rule, and a new example.
Practice routine
Study for ten minutes in four stages. Spend two minutes understanding the rule, three minutes noticing it in a model, three minutes producing your own examples, and two minutes checking errors. Repeat the routine tomorrow with a new topic. Once a week, complete a timed task so that accuracy and speed develop together.
Guided practice
- Write the exact skill tested by this page.
- Create one prediction before you answer a Listening or Reading question, or one plan before you speak or write.
- Produce three original examples connected to your home, study, work, or community.
- Check each example for meaning, grammar, spelling, and natural English.
- Explain in Bengali or English why your best example is correct.
Self-check
Before leaving this lesson, answer these questions:
- What is the main task in this lesson?
- Which mistake is most likely to reduce my score?
- What evidence or explanation supports my answer?
- Can I create an example without copying the page?
- What will I practise for ten minutes tomorrow?
IELTS study reminder
Use this cycle: understand → notice → practise → produce → review. Cambridge-style preparation is not memorising a perfect answer. It is learning to make an appropriate answer in a new situation.
