IELTS Writing Module Overview
The IELTS Writing test is often considered the most challenging part of the exam. It requires you to produce two distinct pieces of writing within 60 minutes, demonstrating your ability to organize ideas, use a wide range of vocabulary, and maintain grammatical accuracy.
Test Components
The Writing module consists of two tasks. Task 2 carries more weight towards your final band score than Task 1.
| Task | Requirement | Recommended Time | Word Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task 1 (Academic) | Describe visual information (graph, chart, map) | 20 Minutes | 150+ Words |
| Task 1 (General) | Write a formal, semi-formal, or informal letter | 20 Minutes | 150+ Words |
| Task 2 | Write a formal essay in response to a prompt | 40 Minutes | 250+ Words |
Band Descriptors
Your writing is assessed based on four equally weighted criteria: 1. Task Achievement/Response: How well you answered the prompt. 2. Coherence and Cohesion: How logically your ideas are organized. 3. Lexical Resource: The range and accuracy of your vocabulary. 4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Your ability to use diverse sentence structures correctly.
