Academic IELTS is normally used for university or professional registration. General Training is normally used for migration, work, or training. Always confirm the required version with the institution or visa authority before booking.

What you need to know
Listening and Speaking are the same in both versions. Reading and Writing are different. Academic Reading uses longer academic texts and Academic Writing Task 1 describes visual information. General Training Reading uses practical texts and General Training Writing Task 1 is a letter.
Step-by-step plan
- Confirm your test purpose, version, and date.
- Take a realistic baseline task.
- Record evidence instead of guessing your level.
- Practise one skill with a clear time limit.
- Review errors and repeat the same skill later.
Practical method
Practise the exact version you will take. A learner can transfer general English skills, but cannot assume that an Academic Task 1 answer prepares them for a General Training letter.
